“Then the King
will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who
are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the
kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the
world. For I was hungry and you gave me something
to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to
drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed
clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked
after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me…I
tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the
least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’”
(Matthew 25:34-40)
Well Of Life works with a consulate
in Dubai and the organisation Reach-Out-Dubai to visit
and assist Christians in prison.
Initially, our visits to the men’s
prison were restricted to public visiting hours –
one hour on a Friday. This involved gathering in a
courtyard with 30 other visitors, separated from the
men we were visiting by a distance of a metre and
a half and prison bars. Inevitably, there was a lot
of shouting, so communication was not easy, and it
was stuffy and exhausting in summer.
But God has been good to us, and
through the consulate, Reach-Out-Dubai and the prison
authorities we have been able to have weekly visits
in the comfort of an office, where we can minister
to prisoners. The prison allows two visitors for these
private visits, which are an enormous privilege.
Our focus initially was on three
long-term prisoners from overseas. Occasionally, when
three- to six-month cases come to our attention we
assist with these. God has worked wonderfully with
the prisoners and we have heard a remarkable testimony
of one being completely healed from cancer. We are
trusting that God will now open doors for women in
the church to visit the women’s prison. We have
faith He will.
